Diamond Care
Caring for Your Diamonds
Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on Earth, but they still require proper care to maintain their brilliance and sparkle. With regular attention, your diamonds will dazzle for generations.
Daily Wear Precautions
Remove your diamond jewelry before:
- Heavy lifting or manual labor that could loosen settings
- Activities that could knock or impact the stone
- Applying lotions, hairspray, perfume, or makeup (put your jewelry on last)
- Using cleaning products or harsh chemicals
While diamonds themselves are extremely durable, the settings that hold them can be damaged by impact or chemicals.
Why Diamonds Lose Their Sparkle
Diamonds are lipophilic, meaning they attract oils and grease. Daily wear exposes your diamonds to:
- Skin oils
- Lotions and cosmetics
- Cooking oils
- Dirt and debris
This buildup creates a film on the diamond's surface, blocking light and diminishing its brilliance. Regular cleaning is essential to restore that signature sparkle.
Cleaning Your Diamonds
For regular at-home cleaning:
- Use warm (not hot or boiling) water
- Add a few drops of gentle dish soap (we recommend blue dish soap)
- Soak your diamond jewelry for 20-30 minutes
- Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush and rinse thoroughly under warm water
- Dry gently with a lint-free microfiber cloth
Weekly cleaning is ideal for frequently worn pieces and monthly for occasional-wear jewelry.
Storage
- Store diamond jewelry separately from other pieces to prevent scratching softer gemstones or metals
- Use individual fabric-lined compartments or soft pouches
- Keep in a cool, dry place away from extreme temperatures
What NOT to Do
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Bleach and chlorine can damage metal settings
- No ultrasonic cleaners at home: Unless recommended by your jeweler, as they can loosen stones
- Don't use abrasive materials such as paper towels, tissues, or rough cloths that can scratch metal settings
- Handle your jewelry by the band or setting to prevent oil transfer
With proper care and regular cleaning, your diamonds will maintain their breathtaking fire and brilliance.
